Roman Villa in Ahrweiler

During building workfor the B 267 in March 1980 at the foot of the Silberberg were rooms of a manor from the 2nd to 3rd century found. The following ten year excavations by the Antiquities and Monuments Office Koblenz were able to reveal the Roman residence with its large bathing tract completely, prove a previous building from the 1st century at the same place and demonstratethe history of the settlement at the foot of the Silberberg from the 1st to the 8th century.

The good state of preservation of the brickwork, in parts up to window height, with colourful decorations in the base area of the rooms is for the area north of the Alps unique and can be compared with similar building in the Mediterranean area.

It is possible since May 1993 to view this extraordinary Roman structure finds in a protective museum building. Since then the visitor has the opportunity to walk through Roman rooms on a fixed trail, which is in most parts suitable for handicapped persons and so relive the upper Roman life and living culture. The exhibition shows the small excavation finds and restored parts of thewall paintings, a large model, a permanent slide show; guided tours as well as special exhibitions, lectures and several special events complete the picture of the high life in the provinces far from the Roman heartland.

A visit to the Museum Roemervilla is especially recommendedto schools.
